The final piece

The back of the CD

The back of the CD has the same consistent print as the inside cover, however i have altered the colour scheme so it doesnt become boring. I have then added some lined pattern in the centre above an below the text. The text consists of three song names and below this is the name of the name of the producers and so forth.I have also placed a barcode to the corner to make it look official. Overall, thecover is fairly simple however the very few elements i have used create a strong, bold outline.

Inside of the CD

The inside of the CD Digipack consists of a funky leopard print background which is pink, black and purple. This again creates a collective look that links the different sides of the CD together. I have then cropped on top an image of Hannah and Vishant together. Here they are positioned so they are fairly close and interment , this is to illustrate the connection of music they have hence the props of the Ipod and headphones. No text is needed to be applied on top of the image.
The spine of the CD Digipack consists of the name of the artist, song and a code. this is in the same typography used on the cover again to create consistency.

CD cover

I Have now completed the front cover and this is what it looks like. I do however just need to add the text on top but i am waiting to make a joint decision with my fellow group member Laura who is making the advert. By doing this the end products will all looks consistent, as a result hey look like they are a collective piece that do go together along with music video, rather than individual pieces.
the front of the CD cover has three old music tapes which are in bright funky colours which connote fun and link to music. In the for front of this there is an image of both the featured artists Hannah and Vishant which have been cropped around and placed on top. The images used show an innocent side of the female artist and a rougher look of the male artist. Hannah in the image is looking as though she is gazed upon something and has a clear connection with that someone or thing. Hannah's costume consists of high heels, a short jumpsuit, leopard print scarf and mini jacket. Her costume creates a subtle but sexy look that fits our genre perfectly and links to the rest of our work through the accessories such as the scarf, bangles and make up. Vishant on the other hand has been positioned so he is holding onto the tip of his hat and is leaning against a wall. Vishants costume consists of jeans, a printed blue t-shirt, chain and trainers. this reflects upon his character which is laid back therefore illustrates a a"cooler" look.

Filming

we have now filmed on four separate occasions, so we have enough footage and variety for the music video. The footage consists of various different shoots for example close ups, medium shoots and long shoots. This includes both artists together and alone in a variety of different outfits with a few props. The majority of the filming has been done on a green screen as we hope to add various different effects to it as our inspiration has been a mixture of music films being Sydney Sampson riverside and Rihanna Rude Boy. we had come across some problems as we had on the first occasion filmed on a white background hoping that would work however when we tried to remove the background to add the effects, the imagery of the artists also began to disappear as the had elements of white on. This meant we had re film everything again.
whilst filming our work i have decided to alter the plans for the CD digipack as after using the plan off the m-drive i felt that our idea wasn't working out as it was not aesthetically pleasing. Therefore i have made the decision to add effects and a more vibrant colours to make it stand out.

Playing around in Photoshop

Today i have selected some pictures which i am going to play around in photoshop with. I've tried sharpening and adding different effects on top of the images this combinded with vibrant colours emphaises the postmodern feel of our project.

Pictures

we have now taken some pictures, and deleted the ones were we can see they are blurred. Here is a sample of a few.

Wednesday, 3 March 2010

Example

Here is what we would like our cover to look like, we like the layered look with the bright pink and orange colour scheme throughout. Also the build up of fun imagery of lips, flowers and drinks are also ideal for genre as bassline music is about having a good time. Therefore from this we will incorarate out own colour theme of gold and lepard print along with funky imagaery such as diamonds which specifically repersent the genre we are flowing.

Postmodernism and Theory

Postmodernism is a term that describes a wide range of techniques used in order to create a piece of media that moves away from the "norms" of society. When creating and planning my CD digipack i am hoping to have used postmodern elements, so the end product is desirable for our target audience. This is due to people in the twenty first century expecting the unexpected, this shows how we what something different, something that challenges us mentally as a result y end product will not be seen as weird but now more accepted. the creative elements within our project include the colours, background and editing used in the music video.
Some theory that helps to support what we are creating and why include Laura Mulvey's hugely influential theory that is fairy simple when looking at. she states men look at women and the media reinforce this by filming or photographing women from a male point of view this shows that the norm for the media representation is that the camera is male. From this we can that a male gaze is enforced thus their attraction to the CD digipack, advertisement and music video must be strong in order for our target audience to want to purchase it. This theory illustrates how women are passive and men are active as a result illustrating the generic identifications of gender. Therefore when creating my part of the project i must consider specific elements that will entice our target audience which is largely male to purchase the CD, this includes what model we use, the costume which she is wearing, the make up she is wearing and how she is positioned. The costume in which she wears attract attention as the lack of it draws the readers eye, the make up creates a sense of a natural women that has a "real" body with curves. Finally her positioning is key in getting a connection between our audience and them.

Random - Back

Here is a CD cover which has an image of dj decks on it here the focal imagery is of a piece of equipment that is used to mix all the tracks together. The image is however blurred so you can identify with the text that is layered upon it. This text is squared which adds a funky edgy look to it.

Sidney Sampson - Front cover

This image displays the cover of Sidney Samson's single Riverside Lets go. It is a well known tune in the music industry and fits the genre that we are trying to imitate. This can be demonstrated through the mixture of colours which includes pink, yellow, blue, orange and green. These vibrant colours have all been mixed together and compose the majority of the cover.
The text on the CD cover is very large an bold this shows the emphasise the text plays and how the lyrics Riverside Lets Go are a focal point of the track. This consequently shows that it is straight to the point and their is no beating round the bush.
Between the text there are funky looking tribal patterns which give the track an ethnic mix to it, this shows how it can appeal to everyone.
Also the idea that there is no imagery of any sort of a cover model or drawing shows the focus on the music itself rather than associations that are made with it. The target audience are left to their own devices to interpret the track however they please without out being influenced by other elements.
Also in the bottom left hand corner is a parental advisory label this also shows the target audience as the explicit nature of it requires the consumers to be over a certain age in order to listen and enjoy the track.

Banofyde - Front cover

Here is the front cover that out artist Bonofyde has already produced for one of his albums. From this we can see that there is a cover image of a barely covered model that is wearing a little blue bikini suit. This reflects the target audience that the type of music is aimed at, those who want to have a good time. It also a as a attention point as many males who see a half naked female are instantly intrigued therefore this can be used as a focus point to gran attention.
The colour theme throughout is blue and silver these are associated with male characteristics and therefore again reflect the audience they are aimed at. However some females found the colour blue attractive therefore it appeals to a wider audience.
There are props used within the shot such as the speakers which demonstrate references to music and are photoshoped in. This shows a layering effect that has been used in order to create a colarge of all the key elements of this type of genre.
The thick font that has flashing lights piercing through it this creates an atmosphere as though you are in a club. As a result referring back to the environment it would be played in. The text which is then displayed identifies our artist by it being placed across the middle, this as a result instantly shows the audience who they are listening to.
Also at the bottom of the CD cover is a link to Bonofydes myspace here this shows a strategic way in which the production company have linked other tracks that the target audience may be interested in and can experience through them going on the site.

Palm Trees

Here is a CD cover of a baseline artist SKINEZEE, from the cover we can see it has a image of a beach with a girl in a swim suit. this is generic for any bassline CD to have a half naked model on the cover in a fantasy destination it therefore lives up to the target audiences fantasies. Again the graffiti text is an essential element that is used to create a urban feel that is key for this type of music. Another element of the front cover that is a desirable for use to use when creating our project is the use of effects added through photoshop. Here these effects create a more visually appealing CD cover. Finally the sea sand theme that is illustrated through the image, text and colour scheme all make the CD cover a collective illustration of the artist.

The back of the CD is fairly plain, it has the same consistant colour scheme and text. However it is straight to the point, were as the front cover is the main visual point.

Gnarls Barkley

Here Gnarls Barkely front cover uses explosive imagery to illustrate a growing attraction to his music. It also refers to the politics of modern society and the growing impact it has on society. The colours are fairly neutral this refers to the middle ground which most people lie on. This includes peaches and greys which make the both blend in but at the same time stand out. The build up of images such as the gas mask, bomb and astronaut also connote references to to outer this world experiences. Also there is images New York in the upper region this plays references to were the artist is from and gets his influences to create his music. The large images and the little amount of text show references to particular elements that the artist wants to be made visible. The target audience can then take an active participation in the argument and support the same beliefs on the topic or go against them even.
The little amount of text that is visible on the cover is shown in the left hand corner of the cover and is in capitals lettering which is quite bold to stand out and be noticed. The artist is therefore making his statement noticed and clear that it is his opinions. Other text that is used is "live, sex, don't walk" here are all references to specific things within our lives, for example with don't walk here a reference to the spilt decisions that we must make in life result in us either going down the correct path or rebelling against what is expected of us.

The back of the CD is fairly minimalistic as there are build up of images there is mainly text on a plain black background. This shows that it is straight to the point, the artist wants you to be interested in the music rather than distracted by images and colours that have no meaning. The background does however have what looks to be smoke after an explosion this links to the front of the CD cover this as a result creates a constancy throughout the cover which makes it look like they are linked through a key event that has occurred. The background also contains a back code this is generic of CD covers to contain an individual code that illustrates they are for a particular CD. Finally there is a small amount of text which has been placed just next to the bar code which lists produces and so on to thank an promotes their intake on the CD.

Kanye West

Here is the front cover of kanye Wests single Flashing Lights. When looking at the cover we can see that there is a cover image of a women topless this is displayed through the use of an effect where by her body outline is show as a flashing light. The cover model also has a futuristic look to her which reflects upon the atmosphere the artist is trying to display. As kanye West demonstrates to his target audience that he and his music is the thing of the future. The use of the topless women also illustrates the explicit nature of Kanye Wests music as shown through the label in the left hand corner. The explicit cover and lyrics of the artists music reflects that of his target as they are 18 and over. This shows how he is able to use these aspects as his target audience is older where as if he was appealing to a younger audience then he most likely would be frowned upon by most parents and would have little support behind his music.
The background of the cover is plain black this shows that more emphasise is to be placed on the music an content rather than making the cover look pretty. The plain background also draws attention to what little has been placed on the cover as the text and imagery is both bright and bold thus standing out. Also on the background of the picture you can see a few flashing lights that reflect upon the title of the again another reference is used to keep a collective image of what is being stated.
The typography on the cover illustrated a light effect this again makes it consistent through out the front cover, as this same effect has been used to compose the cover image of the topless women. The text is also all interlinked together which shows how the artist whats to make references to key thing in life which he uses in his lyrics. The colour again is bright and florescent which makes it stand out as though you are in a rave with all these flashing neon colours.
When looking at the album as a whole we can see that there are few layers that have been used as the main focus on the artist's music and lyrics. The layout of the cover also demonstrates this as the tittle has been placed along the top of the cover in a very large size as this is the name of the song and therefore must be easily recognised. The cover image has been placed towards the left hand side as though the model has here back to what is blinding her this is a reflection of society as we tend to hide from what is expected of out selves or of someone who stands out.

Here i have uploaded the back cover of one of Kanye Wests albums from this we can see a similar themed cover as the same futuristic theme is portrayed again this shows his consistency to illistrate how his music will go on.
Elements which demonstrate this include the use of cartoon imagery this creates a sences of electisicim. As though you are flying into the future and embrasising life.
The use of the earth as a cannon ball shows that we have many bumps in life but we must suceed through them all.
the layout agin is very different as all the text is to the left hand side and the rest of the cover is on the the other two thirds of the cover.

Brief description

From the briefs that were given my group which consists of myself, Laura and Alina have selected to do create a promotional package for the release of an music album which will include a music promo video together with a cover for its release onto a CD, and a magazine advertisement for the release of the album.

Our aim therefore means we must select a genre to follow and then create a CD cover, advertisement and music video to represent it. After much discussion we have come up with the idea to create a promotion for a clubhouse, funky, bassline song. This will appeal to people aged eighteen and above and therefore reflects the very niche market that it is aimed at. Because many of these tracks would be played in a club were you must be eighteen or above to enter. Also many of these people are going to be interested in having a good time dancing and drinking along to the track, this consequently shows the lifestyle choices they make. The style of our music video will therefore represent a new postmodern era as we plan to take elements from the past, present and future mixing them all together resulting in the creation of a eye catching promotion of the latest artist to hit the bassline music industry. Finally the institution that we plan to be signed to is Birmingham bassline, this label reflects the bassline industry and is the epitome of what is out there today. It is the label which our artist is also currently signed to which interlinks the whole project together.

Digital Technologies Skill Audit

Throughout the years i have been studying media studies i have accumilated many skill in the following digital technologies.

For example when using desktop pulishing i can:
- Create text boxes
- Change size of text box
- Insert text
- Change the size/colour of text
- Layer objects
- Change order of objects
- Rotate shapes

I can also use the softare Photophop and by doing so i can:
- Add delete backgrounds
- Change opacity
- Layer images

However when it comes to using equipment such as a camcorder's i lack a in depth knowledge in oredr to produce a high qulaity piece of media. I can use a tripod, load a tape, zoom in and out. But i am unable to apply different seettings such as making it black and white. I am also untrained when editting video footage as i unble to cut footage, move footage, change time speed, add effeccts, remove sound, rewind movies and create them. I can however capture footage, this may be a bassic skill but is essential when creating the piece of media.

Overall, i have many strengths when looking at digital technologies such as using desk top publishing and photoshop. However, i do require some assistance on other aspects such as using a video editing as this is not one of my areas of expertise.
